Benzyl Glycidyl Ether Usage And Synthesis

Uses

Benzyl Glycidyl Ether is widely used in electrical apparatus electromechanics and the machinery industry. Low viscosity can greatly lower the viscosity of epoxy resin. Decrease the viscosity of epoxy resin.

Synthesis

Synthesis of benzyl glycidyl ether: To a stirred mixture of epichlorohydrin (2.0 g, 21.6 mmol), benzyl alcohol (2.12 g, 19.6 mmol) and tetrabutylam monium hydrogen sulphate (290 mg, 0.86 mmol) were added to 50% (w/v) aqueous NaOH (10 ml) drop wise at 0 °C and the reaction mixture was allowed to stir for 30 min at the same temperature. The stirring was con tinued for additional 4 h after which the mixture was extracted with diethyl ether. The ether-extract was washed with brine (2 × 10 ml), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel using a mixture of hexane: ether (6:1) as eluent to obtain an overall yield of 2.0 g (65%)[1].
