Anthemis nobilis, ext. Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Properties
Roman chamomile oil (English chamomile oil) is produced from the dried
flowers of Chamaemelum nobile (L.) All. (Anthemis nobilis L.). It is a light
blue or light greenish-blue liquid with a strong aromatic odor characteristic
of the flowers. The oil is produced on a small scale, for example, in France
and Hungary.
d2020 0.900–0.920; n20D 1.4380–1.4460; acid value: max. 8, ester value. 250–340; solubility: 1 vol in max. 0.6 vol 90% ethanol.
The constituents of Roman chamomile oil include esters of angelic and tiglic
acid. The main constituents are isobutyl and isoamyl esters of angelic acid. Roman chamomile oil is used in very low dosages in the flavoring
of alcoholic beverages and in fine fragrances.
