First Aid Measures
Ingestion
Do not induce emesis. Activated charcoal: administer charcoal as a slurry (240 ml water/30 g charcoal). Usual dose: 25 to 100 g in adults/adolescents.
Inhalation
Move patient to fresh air. Monitor for respiratory distress. If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer oxygen and assist ventilation as required. Treat bronchospasm with beta2 agonist and corticosteroid aerosols.
Skin
Remove contaminated clothing and wash exposed area thoroughly with soap and water. A physician should examine the area if irritation or pain persists. Treat dermal irritation or burns with standard topical therapy. Patients developing dermal hypersensitivity reactions may require treatment with systemic or topical corticosteroids or antihistamines.
Eyes
Irrigate exposed eyes with copious amounts of tepid water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation, pain, swelling, lacrimation, or photophobia persist, the patient should be seen in a health care facility.
Handling and Storage
Storage
Keep in a cool, dry, dark location in a tightly sealed container or cylinder. Keep away from incompatible materials, ignition sources and untrained individuals. Secure and label area. Protect containers/cylinders from physical damage.
Handling
All chemicals should be considered hazardous. Avoid direct physical contact. Use appropriate, approved safety equipment. Untrained individuals should not handle this chemical or its container. Handling should occur in a chemical fume hood.
Hazards Identification
Inhalation
This material is moderately toxic by ingestion, inhalation, and absorption through the skin.
Skin
2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine is a skin irritant, but is not a sensitizer.
Eyes
Eye irritation has been seen in experimental animal studies. Vinylpyridines are nasal irritants.
Ingestion
See inhalation.
Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
Personal Protection
Depending on the extent of possible contact, workers should be provided with personal protective equipment. Rubber and plastic gloves should not be relied upon to prevent skin contact because pyridine and many of its derivatives penetrate these materials.
Respirators
Any self contained breathing apparatus with a full facepiece and operated in a pressure demand or other positive pressure mode or any supplied air respirator with a full facepiece and operated in a pressure demand or other positive pressure mode in combination with an auxiliary self contained breathing apparatus operated in pressure demand or other positive pressure mode.
Exposure Effects
Vinylpyridines can cause respiratory distress. CNS depression is a primary effect of vinylpyridines.

Fire Fighting Measures

Fire Fighting
(Non-Specific -- Combustible Liquid, n.o.s.) Wear self-contained (positive pressure if available) breathing apparatus and full protective clothing. Isolate for 1/2 mile in all directions if tank car or truck is involved in fire. Move container from fire area if you can do so without risk. Spray cooling water on containers that are exposed to flames until well after fire is out. For massive fire in cargo area, use unmanned hose holder or monitor nozzles; if this is impossible, withdraw from area and let fire burn. Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety device or any discoloration of tank due to fire.It is combustible. (Non-Specific -- Combustible Liquid, n.o.s.) Extinguish with dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray, fog, or foam.
Accidental Release Measures
Small spills/leaks
(Non-Specific -- Combustible Liquid, n.o.s.) Keep unnecessary people away; isolate hazard area and deny entry. Stay upwind; keep out of low areas. Shut off ignition sources; no flares, smoking, or flames in hazard area. Stop leak if you can do so without risk. Use water spray to reduce vapors. Absorb spills with sand or noncombustible absorbent material. For large spills dike far ahead.
