First Aid Measures

Ingestion

If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately.

Inhalation

Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid.

Skin

Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical aid if irritation develops or persists.

Eyes

Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.

Hazards Identification

Inhalation

May cause respiratory tract irritation. Irritation may lead to chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema. May cause ulceration and perforation of the nasal septum if inhaled in excessive quantities. May cause pulmonary fibrosis and permanent damage.

Skin

Exposure may cause irritation and possible burns.

Eyes

Exposure to the substance as an aqueous solution may cause irritation and corneal abnormalities.

Ingestion

May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Exposure may cause severe swelling of face and neck areas with possible death.

Hazards

Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas.

Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Personal Protection

Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure.

Respirators

A respiratory protection program that meets OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.134 and ANSI Z88.2 requirements or European Standard EN 149 must be followed whenever workplace conditions warrant a respirator's use.

Exposure Effects

May cause respiratory tract cancer. Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause permanent bone structure abnormalities. May cause liver and kidney damage. Chronic inhalation may cause nasal septum ulceration and perforation. Chronic inhalation of cadmium compounds has been associated with lung and prostrate cancer.

Exposure limit(s)

5 µg/m3 PEL {2 µg/m3 respirable TLV}

Fire Fighting Measures

Fire Fighting

Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. Water runoff can cause environmental damage. Dike and collect water used to fight fire. Dusts may be combustible when exposed to heat, flame, or oxidizing agents. Extinguishing media: For small fires, use water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide or chemical foam. Substance is noncombustible; use agent most appropriate to extinguish surrounding fire.

Fire Potential

Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes.
