Barium chloride dihydrate(10326-27-9)
Physical and Chemical Properties
Appearance
White crystalline solid with a bitter, salty taste. Odorless.
Solubility in water
375 g/L
Melting Point
960
Density
3.09 g/cm3 (18 C)
Usage
Used in the purification of brine solution in caustic chlorine plants and also in the manufacture of heat treatment salts, case hardening of steel, and in the manufacture of pigments.
First Aid Measures
Ingestion
Do NOT induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation
Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid. DO NOT use mouth-to-mouth respiration.
Skin
Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse.
Eyes
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Handling and Storage
Storage
Keep away from heat and flame. Keep away from sources of ignition. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances.
Handling
Wash thoroughly after handling. Wash hands before eating. Use with adequate ventilation. Minimize dust generation and accumulation. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Do not ingest or inhale.
Hazards Identification
Ingestion
Harmful if swallowed. May cause kidney damage. May cause severe digestive tract irritation with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause hemorrhaging of the digestive tract. Barium chloride affects the muscles (especially the smooth muscles of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems), causes salivation, tingling of the mouth or face, convulsions, numbness, muscle paralysis, respiratory failure, slow pulse rate, pulmonary edema, irregular heart beat, potassium deficiency in the
Inhalation
Causes respiratory tract irritation. May cause effects similar to those described for ingestion.
Skin
Causes skin irritation. Prolonged contact with the skin, especially if the skin is wet or moist, causes necrosis.
Eyes
Contact produces irritation, tearing, and burning pain. May cause conjunctivitis.
Hazards
Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas.

Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
Personal Protection
Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure.
Respirators
Follow the OSHA respirator regulations found in 29CFR 1910.134 or European Standard EN 149. Always use a NIOSH or European Standard EN 149 approved respirator when necessary.
Exposure limit(s)
OSHA PEL: TWA 0.5 mg/m3 NIOSH REL: TWA 0.5 mg/m3 *Note: PEL and REL also applies to other soluble Ba cmpds (as Ba) except Barium sulfate. NIOSH IDLH: 50 mg/m3 (as Ba)
Poison Class
2 (Very strong toxins)
Fire Fighting Measures
Fire Fighting
Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic fumes. Extinguishing media: For small fires, use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or alcohol-resistant foam. Substance is noncombustible; use agent most appropriate to extinguish surrounding fire.
Fire Potential
This material is probably combustible.
Stability and Reactivity
Incompatibilities
Incompatible with bromine trifluoride and 2-furan percarboxylic acid (explodes at room temperature). Reacts violently with sulfuric acid.
Stability
Stable under normal shipping and handling conditions.
Decomposition
Hydrogen chloride, chlorine.
Combustion Products
Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases.
