First Aid Measures

Ingestion

If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately. Induce vomiting only when instructed to do so by a physician.

Inhalation

Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.

Skin

Get medical aid immediately. Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Discard contaminated clothing in a manner which limits further exposure. Destroy contaminated shoes.

Eyes

Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid immediately.

Hazards Identification

Inhalation

May cause effects similar to those described for ingestion. Causes irritation of the mucous membrane and upper respiratory tract.

Skin

May cause skin irritation.

Eyes

May cause eye irritation.

Ingestion

May be fatal if swallowed. Causes gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause weight loss and irritability. Symptoms include weakness, fatigue, lassitude, and headache. Mental dullness and coma may develop. Impairs kidney function, including excessive thirst and urination. Causes calcification in cornea and conjunctiva in form of band keratopathy. Mimics hyperparathyroidism with muscular weakness, nervousness, itching, and hypertension.

Hazards

Shows signs of decomposition when stored for a few days at room temperature.

Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Personal Protection

Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure.

Respirators

A respiratory protection program that meets OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.134 and ANSI Z88.2 requirements or European Standard EN 149 must be followed whenever workplace conditions warrant a respirator's use.

Exposure Effects

Chronic exposure may cause reproductive disorders and teratogenic effects. Vitamin D ingested in excess results in hypercalcemia, which is caused by excessive absorption of massive quantities of calcium by the intes tine and enhanced bone resorption. Causes impairment of kidneys inclu ding excessive thirst and urination, nocturia, proteinuria, and decrea sed urinary concentration ability.

Fire Fighting Measures

Fire Fighting

Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Extinguishing media: Use agent most appropriate to extinguish fire. In case of fire use water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or appropriate foam.

Fire Potential

Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes.

Accidental Release Measures

Small spills/leaks

Wash area with soap and water. Clean up spills immediately, using the appropriate protective equipment. Sweep up, then place into a suitable container for disposal. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Provide ventilation.

Stability and Reactivity

Stability

Stable under normal temperatures and pressures. Decomposes on exposure to air and light.

Incompatibilities

Strong oxidizing agents, strong acids, strong bases, air, direct light.

Decomposition

Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, acrid smoke and fumes.

Combustion Products

Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases.
