First Aid Measures

Ingestion

Do NOT induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately.

Inhalation

Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. DO NOT use mouth-to-mouth respiration. If breathing has ceased apply artificial respiration using oxygen and a suitable mechanical device such as a bag and a mask.

Skin

Get medical aid immediately. Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse. Destroy contaminated shoes.

Eyes

Get medical aid immediately. Do NOT allow victim to rub or keep eyes closed. Extensive irrigation is required (at least 30 minutes).

Handling and Storage

Storage

Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a tightly closed container. Keep away from water. Corrosives area. Refrigerator (approx 4 C). Water free area - refrigerator.

Handling

Wash thoroughly after handling. Wash hands before eating. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Use only in a well ventilated area. Do not allow water to get into the container because of violent reaction. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Do not ingest or inhale. Discard contaminated shoes. Keep from contact with moist air and steam.

Hazards Identification

Inhalation

Causes chemical burns to the respiratory tract. Causes irritation of mucous membrane.

Skin

Causes skin burns.

Eyes

Causes eye burns. Lachrymator.

Ingestion

May cause severe and permanent damage to the digestive tract. Causes gastrointestinal tract burns.

Hazards

Material will react with water and may release a flammable and/or toxic gas. Vapors may be heavier than air. They can spread along the ground and collect in low or confined areas. May ignite or explode on contact with steam or moist air.

Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Personal Protection

Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to minimize contact with skin.

Respirators

A respiratory protection program that meets OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.134 and ANSI Z88.2 requirements or European Standard EN 149 must be followed whenever workplace conditions warrant a respirator's use.

Exposure Effects

Symptoms of exposure may include burning sensation, coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea and vomiting. Chronic inhalation may cause spasm, inflammation and edema of the larynx and bronchi, chemical pneumonitis, and pulmonary edema.

Fire Fighting Measures

Flash Point

>105

Fire Fighting

Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Water Reactive. Material will react with water and may release a flammable and/or toxic gas. May ignite or explode on contact with steam or moist air. Extinguishing media: Use dry sand or earth to smother fire. Use foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide. Use agent most appropriate to extinguish fire. DO NOT USE WATER! Contact professional fire-fighters immediately.

Fire Potential

Combustible material: may burn but does not ignite readily.

Accidental Release Measures

Small spills/leaks

Absorb spill with inert material, (e.g., dry sand or earth), then place into a chemical waste container. Clean up spills immediately, using the appropriate protective equipment. Provide ventilation. Do not expose spill to water. Do not get water inside containers.

Stability and Reactivity

Disposal Code

11

Stability

Combines vigorously or explosively with water.

Incompatibilities

Strong oxidizing agents, strong bases, alcohols.

Decomposition

Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen bromide.

Combustion Products

Heat of fire can cause decomposition, with evolution of highly toxic and irritating hydrogen bromide and bromophosgene vapors.
