First Aid Measures
Ingestion
Treat symptomatically and supportively. Get medical aid.
Inhalation
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Skin
Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical aid if irritation develops or persists.
Eyes
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
Personal Protection
Eyes: Wear dust goggles. Skin: Wear appropriate gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to minimize contact with skin.
Respirators
A NIOSH/MSHA approved air purifying dust or mist respirator or European Standard EN 149. Follow the OSHA respirator regulations found in 29CFR 1910.134 or European Standard EN 149. Always use a NIOSH or European Standard EN 149 approved respirator when necessary.
Exposure Effects
Prolonged exposure to respirable crystalline quartz may cause delayed lung injury/fibrosis (silicosis).
Exposure limit(s)
NIOSH REL: Ca TWA 0.05 mg/m3 See Appendix A NIOSH IDLH: Potential occupational carcinogen 25 mg/m3 (cristobalite, tridymite); 50 mg/m3 (quartz, tripoli)
Poison Class
F (Not subject to toxicity classification)
Stability and Reactivity
Incompatibilities
Dissolves readily in hydrofluoric acid, forming silicon tetrafluoride, a corrosive gas. Reacts violently with powerful oxidizers such as chlorine trifluoride, manganese trifluoride, oxygen difluoride, vinyl acetate, and certain other fluorine-containing compounds. Will be attacked by strong alkalis.
Stability
Stable under normal shipping and handling conditions.
Decomposition
Irritating and toxic gases.
