First Aid Measures

Ingestion

If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately. Induce vomiting by giving one teaspoon of Syrup of Ipecac.

Inhalation

Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.

Skin

Get medical aid immediately. Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse.

Eyes

Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid immediately.

Handling and Storage

Storage

Keep away from sources of ignition. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances.

Handling

Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation. Ground and bond containers when transferring material. Use spark-proof tools and explosion proof equipment. Keep container tightly closed. Do not get on skin or in eyes. Do not ingest or inhale.

Hazards Identification

Inhalation

May cause respiratory tract irritation. May cause effects similar to those described for ingestion. Inhalation of aniline causes anoxia due to the formation of methemoglobinemia.

Skin

May cause skin irritation. Substance is rapidly absorbed through the skin. If absorbed, may cause symptoms similar to those for ingestion.

Eyes

May cause eye irritation. Vapors may cause eye irritation. May cause eye injury.

Ingestion

May cause methemoglobinemia, cyanosis, convulsions, and death. Effects may be delayed 2 to 4 hours. Methemoglobinemia is characterized by dizziness, drowsiness, headache, breath shortness, cyanosis with bluish skin, rapid heart rate and chocolate-brown colored blood. May be harmful if swallowed. Alcohol can intensify effects.

Hazards

When heated, vapors may form explosive mixtures with air: indoors, outdoors, and sewers explosion hazards.

Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Personal Protection

Eyes: Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European Standard EN166. Skin: Wear appropriate gloves to prevent skin exposure. Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure.

Respirators

Follow the OSHA respirator regulations found in 29CFR 1910.134 or European Standard EN 149. Always use a NIOSH or European Standard EN 149 approved respirator when necessary.

Exposure Effects

Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause adverse reproductive effects. May cause liver and kidney damage. May cause bone marrow abnormalities with damage to blood forming tissues. May cause anemia and other blood cell abnormalities. Repeated exposure may cause central nervous system damage. Reproductive effects have been reported in animals.

Exposure limit(s)

OSHA PEL: TWA 6 mg/m3 (1 ppm) skin NIOSH REL: TWA 3 mg/m3 skin NIOSH IDLH: 300 mg/m3

Fire Fighting Measures

Flash Point

165

Autoignition

500

Fire Fighting

Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. To extinguish fire, use water, dry chemical, chemical foam, or alcohol-resistant foam. Use agent most appropriate to extinguish fire.

Upper exp. limit

9.8

Lower exp. limit

1.5

Fire Potential

Slightly flammable. Will burn in air, producing highly toxic vapors.

Accidental Release Measures

Small spills/leaks

Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal container. Clean up spills immediately, using the appropriate protective equipment. Wear a self contained breathing apparatus and appropriate Personal protection. (See Exposure Controls, Personal Protection section). Remove all sources of ignition. Provide ventilation.
