Uses

N-Dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate has been used in a study to assess protein structural change in a mixed system of ionic and zwitterionic surfactants. It has also been used in a study to investigate the interaction between ionic liquid and zwitterionic surfactant.

General Description

N-Dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate is a zwitterionic surfactant.

The general procedure for the synthesis of 3-(N,N-dimethyldodecylammonium) propane sulfonate from 1,3-propanesulfonolactone and dodecyldimethyl tertiary amine was as follows: N,N-dimethyldodecylamine (50 mmol) was mixed with 1,3-propanesulfonolactone (52 mmol) in ethanol (20 mL), and the reaction was stirred at room temperature for 24 hours. After completion of the reaction, the reaction system was cooled to 0-5 °C in an ice-water bath, and the resulting precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with ether, and subsequently dried under vacuum at 65 °C for 8 h. The target product, 3-(N,N-dimethyldodecylammonium) propanesulfonate (1), was obtained in 95% yield.
