Triethyl 3-Methyl-4-phosphono-2-butenoate is used in the synthesis of potent insect growth regulators. Also used in the synthesis of retinoic acids. This compound is an E/Z mixture.

Synthesis

Add 440 g of triethyl phosphite to a 3000 mL four-necked flask equipped with a thermometer and cooling tube and use an oil bath to Heat to an internal temperature of 110??C. Spend 100 minutes adding dropwise 1500 g of ethyl 4-bromo-3-methylbutenoate/monochlorobenzene solution (GC pure degree 90%). At the end of the dropwise addition, the reaction was carried out at an internal temperature of 110 to 120??C for 3 h. This resulted in 1700 g of triethyl 3-methyl-4-phosphonobutenoate/monochlorobenzene solution at 81% GC purity.
