Uses

Neoxanthin may be used as a reference standard in the determination of the analyte in fruits using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with diode array detector (DAD) and mass spectrometry (MS).)

Definition

ChEBI: A neoxanthin in which all of the double bonds have trans geometry.

General Description

Neoxanthin is an allenic xanthophyll?and a precursor of the plant hormone abscisic acid, which is formed as the last product of carotenoid synthesis in green plants.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Neoxanthin is a carotenoid and intermediate in the synthesis of abscisic acid from violaxanthin. Neoxanthin is found in apple and a constituent of paprika, lucerne, orange, and other species and has been shown to exhibit apoptotic and anti-proliferative functions.

in vivo

The gastrointestinal metabolism of Neoxanthin in mice is investigated. Two hours after the oral administration of Neoxanthin (40 nmol/mouse), Neoxanthin is found in the plasma and livers of mice. The concentrations of Neoxanthin is 13.6-9.0 nM in plasma, and 7.3 3.6 pmol/g in liver, respectively. (R/S)-Neochrome is also found in the small intestinal contents of Neoxanthin-administered mice[3].
