Synthesis

N-butyllithium (1.6 M hexane, 18.8 ml, 30.0 mmol) was dissolved in a diethyl ether/tetrahydrofuran mixture. The reaction mixture was cooled to -78 C. To the reaction mixture was added a diethyl ether (10 ml) solution of trichloroethylene (0.9 ml, 10.0 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at -78C for 1 hr. The reaction mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature. The formed suspension was cooled again to -78C. The formed suspension was quickly added to a solution of chlorodiphenylphosphine (3.60 ml, 20.0 mmol) in diethyl ether (15 ml) at -78C. The suspension was stirred at room temperature overnight. The solvent was removed by condensation. The residue was extracted with pentane. The product bis(diphenylphosphine)acetylene was obtained.
