1-PHENYL-3-METHYL-3-PENTANOL Chemical Properties,Usage,Production

Chemical Properties

Colorless clear oily liquid

Chemical Properties

1-PHENYL-3-METHYL-3-PENTANOL has not been found in nature. It is a colorless liquid with a delicate peony, slightly fruity odor. Phenylethyl methyl ethyl carbinol can be prepared from benzylacetone and ethylmagnesium chloride by a Grignard reaction. It is used to perfume soaps, cosmetics, and detergents.

Chemical Properties

1-Phenyl-3-methyl-3-pentanol has a warm, rose-like odor and a fruity, green taste.
The low vapour pressure of 3-Methyl-1-Phenyl-3-Pentanol may tempt the observer to think it is a weak odour, but it is certainly not. Its power is also demonstrated in flavours, where trace of about 1 ppm is perceptible with warm-fruity notes. Its fixative effect is also utilized in various fruit complexes, and the concentration in finished products is normally as low as 0.2 to 0.8 ppm.

Preparation

May be prepared from phenethyl magnesium bromide and methyl ethyl ketone.

Definition

ChEBI: 3-Methyl-1-phenyl-3-pentanol is a member of benzenes.

Safety Profile

Moderately toxic by ingestion. A skin irritant. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes.
