Chemical Properties

Cerium(IV) Trifluoromethanesulfonate (ceric triflate) is a oxidizing agent for benzyl alcohols and toluenes; yellow powder or solid; sol water, THF, DME, dioxane; insol dichloromethane, hexane, benzene.

Uses

Cerium(IV) trifluoromethanesulfonate, is used as a strong oxidizing agent, in the oxidation of benzyl alcohols and alkylbenzenes to aryl aldehydes and aryl ketones respectively. It can also be used as a catalyst for high-yield deprotection of tert-butyldimethylsilyl ethers

Preparation

By the reaction of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid with freshly prepared cerium(IV) carbonate[1]. Cerium(IV) Trifluoromethanesulfonate can be prepared in situ by the electrochemical oxidation of Ce(OTf)3 in aqueous trifluoromethanesulfonic acid[2].

storage

Cerium(IV) trifluoromethanesulfonate is extremely hygroscopic and should be stored under strict absence of moisture. This reagent should be handled in a fume hood.
