Chemical Properties

2-Ethylhexyl glycidyl ether is a colourless liquid, it has a low volatility and good chemical stability.

Uses

2-Ethylhexyl glycidyl ether is a used as a commercial reactive diluent. It is also known to induce sister-chromatid exchanges in Chinese hamster cells.

Uses

It constitutes a reactive diluent and may be used as a relatively nonvolatile chloride-scavenging agent and stabilizer for vinyl resins and rubber.

Production Methods

2-Ethylhexyl glycidyl ether is made by condensation of 2-ethylhexanol with epichlorohydrin followed by dehydrochlorination with caustic to form the epoxy ring.

General Description

Clear colorless liquid.

Insoluble in water.

Synthesis

2-ethylhexyl glycidyl ether is synthesized by reacting 2-Ethylhexanol and epichlorohydrin in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst in a condensation reaction to form a halohydrin, and then followed by a caustic dehydrochlorination.
