Chemical Properties
Methyl cedryl ether is a colorless, slightly oily liquid. B.P. approximately 258℃. Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oils. Methyl cedryl ether is a kind of fragrant raw material, which has the smell of ambergris and ointment. It is generally prepared from cedar wood oil.
Uses
used in the fragrance of perfume;
used in cosmetic and toilet soap essences;
used as solvent;
used as intermediate in medicine production
Synthesis
Using fir oil as the raw material for the synthesis of methyl cedarwood ether, 3,6,8,8-tetramethyl-octahydro-1H-3a,7-methyleneglycyclohexan-6-ol obtained by isolation of fir oil was reacted with sodium benzyl to obtain sodium 3,6,8,8-tetramethyl-octahydro-1H-3a,7-methyleneglycyclohexan-6-ol, which was then methanatized with dimethyl sulphate, i.e., after the salt-forming and methanatization reactions Production of methyl cedryl ether (10-methoxy-2,2,6,10-tetramethyltricyclo-[5,3,1,03,7]-undecane).
