1. 2.55 g (105 mmol) of magnesium metal (20-50 mesh) and 75 g of tetrahydrofuran (THF) were added to a 200 mL flask, replaced with a nitrogen atmosphere, and the reaction solution was cooled to 0 °C with stirring. 2. After cooling, the Grignard reagent was prepared by slow dropwise addition of 19.95 g (100 mmol) of 1-bromo-6-chlorohexane (solvent to dihaloalkane weight ratio 3.76) for about 2 hours and aging at the same temperature for 2 hours. 3. The reaction solution was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) with a yield of 86 area% and a selectivity of 86% for the Grignard reagent. 4. 0.16 g (1.0 mmol) of ferric chloride was added to the Grignard reagent solution, maintained at 0 °C, and 6.25 g (100 mmol) of vinyl chloride was drummed into the solution over a period of 2 hours and aged at that temperature for 1 hour. 5. Upon completion of the reaction, 10% aqueous ammonium chloride and methylene chloride were added to dissolve and separate the resulting salt. 6. After separation of the organic layer, 8-chloro-1-octene was quantified by gas chromatography (GC) to give 8-chloro-1-octene as the target product in 72% yield. The results are shown in Table 4.
