Ammonium iodide Usage And Synthesis
Description
Ammonium iodide (chemical formula:NH4I) is an inorganic compound consisting of ammonium and iodide. It can be prepared by the reaction between hydroiodic acid (or hydrogen iodide gas) with ammonia or ammonia hydroxide. It can be used in photographic chemicals and some medications. It can also be supplemented to many animal feed formulations as a dietary source of Iodine. It can be added to a release agent and being capable of increasing the throughput and success rate due to smoother bead release process, reducing damage to platinum ware due to forced bead release as well as reducing crucible cleaning requirement.

Chemical Properties
white to light yellow crystalline powder
Uses
It is used in photographic chemicals and some medications. It is a catalyst for dethioacetalization reaction.
Uses
White crystals made by the action of ammonium hydroxide on hydroiodic acid followed by crystallization. Soluble in water and alcohol, ammonium iodide was used as a halide in collodion formulas, particularly in situations where it was needed for use immediately. Ammonium iodide decomposes quickly when mixed with plain collodion, releasing iodine.
Uses
In photographic chemicals.
Definition
ChEBI: The iodide salt of ammonia.
General Description
Odorless white solid. Sinks and mixes with water.
Air & Water Reactions
Water soluble.
Reactivity Profile
Ammonium iodide is light sensitive, becomes yellow or brown on exposure to air and light because of liberation of Iodine [Merck 11th ed. 1989]. Bromine trifluoride reacts explosively with the following ammonium bromide, ammonium chloride, Ammonium iodide [Mellor 2 Supp. 1:165 1956].
Health Hazard
Inhalation causes irritation of nose and throat. Contact with eyes causes irritation.
Flammability and Explosibility
Not classified
Purification Methods
The iodide crystallises from EtOH on addition of ethyl iodide, and is very hygroscopic. Store it in the dark. Its solubility is 177g in 100g of H2O at 25o. [Schmeisser in Handbook of Preparative Inorganic Chem (Ed. Brauer) Academic Press Vol I p 289-290 1963.]
