Uses

4,4''-Bis(2,3-epoxypropoxy)-3,3'',5,5''-tetramethylbiphenyl can be used for bisphenol A-free in-can anticorrosive coating for metal packaging container.

Synthesis

The traditional preparation of 3,3'5,5'-tetramethylbiphenyl bisphenol diglycidyl ether is mainly prepared by a one-step method using NaOH, but in order to obtain a product with an epoxy equivalent close to the theoretical value, the addition of NaOH is strictly required, and the post-reaction treatment is cumbersome. Take isopropanol 10mL, epichlorohydrin 110g, 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethyl-4,4’-biphenol 14.52g, tetrabutylammonium bromide 0.15g, 90 ?? nitrogen stirring reaction for 10 hours, dropwise addition of sodium hydroxide containing 8g of a solution with a concentration of 30%, while the decompression of steam to remove the excess epichlorohydrin, dropwise addition of sodium hydroxide to continue the reaction for 30 minutes. After adding continue to stir the reaction for 30 minutes, cold water rinse twice, after filtration with methanol / acetone (2:1 v/v) mixed solution recrystallized twice, activated charcoal discoloration, 70 ?? vacuum drying to get a light yellow 3,3'5,5'-tetramethylbiphenyl bisphenol diglycidyl ether 24.84 g. Yield: 86%, epoxy equivalents: 189g/mol, melting point: 104-106??C.
