(±)-Cloprostenol sodium salt Usage And Synthesis
Description
±)-Cloprostenol sodium salt is the d-enantiomer of Cloprostenol (C587300), an aryl-oxymethyl analog of prostaglandin F2α.
Uses
(±)-Cloprostenol sodium salt is a prostaglandin that dissolves the corpus luteum of cattle and is used as a veterinary drug.
brand name
Estrumate(Bayer Animal Health).
General Description
Cloprostenol sodium (Estrumate)is available as the sodium salt from Bayer AgriculturalDivision or Bayvet Division of Miles Laboratory as an aqueoussolution containing 250 mg/mL.
Biological Activity
Water-soluble prostaglandin F 2 α (PGF 2 α ) analog; acts as a potent FP receptor agonist (EC 50 = 0.84 nM). Potently inhibits differentiation of adipocyte precursor cells. Luteolytic agent in vivo .
Side effects
A low incidence of clostridial and other infections at the injection site has been reported following prostaglandin administration. Treated animals should be closely observed post injection and appropriate antibiotic therapy initiated at the first sign(s) of infection.
Very rarely, anaphylactic reactions have occurred after administration of the product. Overdose: At 50 and 100 times the recommended dose of cloprostenol mild side effects may be detected. These include increased uneasiness, mild transient diarrhea, slight frothing, and milk letdown.
Veterinary Drugs and Treatments
Cloprostenol is approved for use in beef or dairy cattle to induce
luteolysis. It is recommended by the manufacturer for unobserved
or undetected estrus in cows cycling normally, pyometra or chronic
endometritis, expulsion of mummified fetus, luteal cysts, induced
abortions after mismating, and to schedule estrus and ovulation for
controlled breeding.
Cloprostenol has been used in dogs for pregnancy termination
and treatment of open pyometra. The use of cloprostenol for pyometra
is controversial as some believe dinoprost (PGF2alpha) is
more effective and has fewer adverse effects than cloprostenol.
Solubility in water
Soluble in H2O.
