Uses
As an important class of polyglycerol fatty acid esters, isostearic acid has long been widely used in cosmetics and lubricants due to its excellent low-temperature properties and resistance. Polyglycerol fatty acid esters can be used as defoamers, viscosity modifiers, crystallization regulators, coloring agents, and antibacterial preservatives. Furthermore, they are environmentally friendly and safe surfactants, possessing characteristics such as non-toxicity, non-irritation, and biodegradability, making them an ideal additive for food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.
Application
Antibacterial Properties: Polyglycerol isostearate possesses certain antibacterial properties, inhibiting the growth of various microorganisms. Combined with its non-toxic and edible characteristics, it can be used as a food-grade antibacterial agent in canned and bagged foods. Daily Chemicals: Polyglycerol isostearate has excellent emulsifying ability, is non-irritating to skin and mucous membranes, and is non-toxic and harmless, making it ideal for use in detergents and cosmetics, especially baby products. Pharmaceutical Industry: In the pharmaceutical field, it can be used as an emulsifier, solubilizer, dispersant, and penetrant. It can also be used as an adjuvant in ointments, suppositories, tablets, powders, and injections. Other Applications: Polyglycerol isostearate has good heat resistance and flowability, and can be used as a plasticizer, lubricant, anti-drip agent, and antistatic agent for resins such as polyoxyethylene and polyolefins. It is widely used in plastics, synthetic resins, and rubber processing. It can also be used as a defoamer for papermaking, a fiber softener, an antistatic agent, a modifier for heat-resistant lubricating products, an emulsifier, dispersant, and soil stabilizer for insecticides, and an additive for oil products such as lubricating oils and synthetic oils.
Synthesis
Polyglycerol-2 triisostearate was prepared as follows: a friction reducing additive of 3 g was produced by mixing 280.5 g of diglycerol and 719.5 g of isostearic acid, and the mixture was heated to 230??C. This temperature was maintained until the acid value of the mixture was below 1.5 mgKOH/g, at which point the transparency of the product was visually inspected. If the product is not transparent, the reaction is continued at the same temperature until transparency is achieved. The reaction was then cooled to 80-90??C and 4 g of phosphoric acid (75 wt%) was added in order to neutralize the catalyst. The product was then filtered to remove solid impurities. The deodorization process was carried out by applying fresh steam to the product for about 2 hours at 125-135??C, as needed. The final product has a saponification value of 146 mgKOH/g, an acid value of 1.4 mgKOH/g, an iodine value of 1.7 gl/100 g, and contains a mixture of 28 wt% mono-,41 wt% di- and 28 wt% polyglycerol-2 triisostearate of diglycerol with 3 wt% unreacted diglycerol.
