Uses

Paraformaldehyde is not a fixative. It must depolymerize into formaldehyde in solution. In cell culture, a typical formaldehyde fixation procedure involves placing the specimen on ice for 10 minutes using a 4% formaldehyde solution in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). In histological and pathological specimen preparation, the fixation step is typically performed for at least 24 hours using 10% neutral buffered formalin (4% formaldehyde).
