Example 4 Synthesis of N-methyl-2-fluorobenzylamine: to a stirred solution of compound 16 (135.6 mg, 0.5 mmol, 1.0 eq.) in anhydrous THF (5 mL) was slowly added LiAlH4 (38 mg, 1.0 mmol, 2.0 eq.) at 0 °C. The reaction mixture was heated to reflux and stirred for 10 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, it was cooled to room temperature and the reaction was carefully quenched with water and subsequently extracted with ether (10 mL x 3). The target product N-methyl-2-fluorobenzylamine was isolated and purified by acid/base extraction using 2N HCl and 2N NaOH. Finally, the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure (15 torr) to give the colorless oily product N-methyl-2-fluorobenzylamine (60 mg, 86% yield).
