Uses

N-(1-Ethylpropyl)-3,4-xylidine is a useful compound in the synthesis of dinitro herbicides via one-step dinitration with nitric acid in continuous-flow microreactor.

General method: 3,4-dimethyliodobenzene (0.10 mol) was dissolved in xylene (200 mL), bis(triphenylphosphine)dichloropalladium (0.0005 mol) and potassium tert-butoxide (0.20 mol) were added sequentially, and after stirring, 3-aminopentane (0.11 mol) was added. The temperature of the reaction system was raised to 90 °C and the reaction was maintained at this temperature for 6 hours. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and filtered. The filtrate was washed sequentially with 100 mL of 5% aqueous citric acid solution, 100 mL of saturated sodium carbonate solution and 100 mL of saturated sodium chloride solution, and the organic phase was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was removed by concentration under reduced pressure until no bubbles were produced to give 18.4 g of the oily product N-(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethylaniline. Based on the amount of 3,4-dimethyliodobenzene fed, the product yield was 96.3% and the purity was 96.8% as determined by HPLC.
