GENERAL METHOD: Sodium nitrite (0.69 g, 0.01 mol) was added in batches over 10-15 min to a mixture containing 0.01 mol arylcyclopropane (1a-1l), trifluoroacetic acid (5.2 g) and chloroform (15 mL).The reaction mixture was cooled and then slowly heated up to 20°C and maintained at that temperature for 1 hr. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was poured into 100 mL of cold water. The organic phase was separated and the aqueous phase was extracted with chloroform (2 x 10 mL), the organic phase and the extract were combined and subsequently washed with water (2 x 30 mL) and dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was analyzed by 1H NMR. The target compound 21 was purified by crystallization. The exact composition of the reaction mixture is detailed in Table 1.The physical constants and spectral data of the obtained compounds 2a [16], 2b [30] and 21 [28] are in agreement with the literature reports.
