Chemical Properties

It is soluble in organic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, and DMSO, and is derived from frankincense.

Uses

ALPHA-BOSWELLIC ACID is the principal constitutents of frankincense (olibanum). A specific, nonredox inhibitor of 5-lipoxygenase used to treat inflammation.

in vivo

alpha-Boswellic acid (3 or 10 mg/kg, intraperitoneal injection) decreases epidermal thickening, mast cell count and dermal infiltration in BALB/c mice induced by 2, 4-dinitrochlorobenzene^[1].
alpha-Boswellic acid (200 mg/kg, gavage) has a protective effect on ethanol-induced gastric injury in rats^[2].

Animal Model:	2,4-Dinitrochlorobenzene-Induced Atopic-like Dermatitis in BALB/c Mice^[1]
Dosage:	3 or 10 mg/kg
Administration:	i.p.
Result:	Reduced the severity of the AD-like symptoms. Attenuated the increase in ear thickness and decreased cutaneous TEWL in DNCB-treated mice.

Animal Model:	Ethanol-induced gastric injury in rats^[2]
Dosage:	200 mg/kg
Administration:	i.g.
Result:	Reduced injuries associated with the administration of ethanol, gastric juice acidity and the formation of MDA and increased CAT activity and SOD activity and the level of NO and PGE-2 in a dose-depended manner. Increased the expression of both Nrf2 and HO-1.
