GENERAL METHOD: Benzaldehyde (60 mmol) was added slowly and dropwise to a methanol (80 mL) solution of ethylenediamine (100 mmol) at 0°C. Subsequently, the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 12 h (Scheme 1) [4]. Upon completion of the reaction, the crude product N1,N2-dibenzylidene ethyl-1,2-diamine was vacuum filtrated. The obtained residue was dissolved in 100 mL of dichloromethane and dried with anhydrous potassium carbonate. Finally, the solvent was evaporated under high vacuum to obtain pure N1,N2-dibenzylidene ethyl-1,2-diamine.
