DL-Camphor Usage And Synthesis

Application

This product is a white crystalline powder or a colorless, translucent hard lump with a pungent, characteristic odor and an initially pungent taste followed by a cooling sensation. It is easily volatile at room temperature and readily soluble in ethanol, fatty oils, or volatile oils, but only slightly soluble in water. Camphor has a weak antiseptic effect. When applied to the skin, it stimulates the skin's cold receptors, producing a cooling sensation, thus inhibiting itching and providing an antipruritic effect. Vigorous rubbing reflexively causes vasodilation and skin redness. Camphor also has some weak local anesthetic effects. This product can be formulated into camphor liniment, which is taken internally as a stimulant and carminative, and externally as a skin irritant for neuralgia, muscle pain, or joint pain. Its local irritant effect can also be used to treat frostbite (unbroken lesions). This product, combined with menthol and other ingredients, forms compound camphor ointment, which has antipruritic, antiseptic, and local blood circulation-improving effects, and is used for unbroken frostbite, neurodermatitis, etc. It can also be mixed with peanut oil to make a 20% camphor liniment, which is a mild irritant and is often used for neuralgia, muscle pain or joint pain.

Chemical Properties

A white crystalline powder or a colorless translucent lump, with a pungent odor, acrid at first, cool afterward, volatile at room temperature, easily soluble in ethanol, fatty oil or volatile oil, and very slightly soluble in water . Camphor has a weak antiseptic effect.

Definition
