4-Amino-2-bromopyridine is used as medical intermediate.

Synthesis

A conventional synthetic route toward 4-amino-2-bromopyridine starts from its precursor, 2-bromo-4-nitropyridine, where the nitro group is reduced to an amino group via the action of elemental metals. Common reduction systems include iron powder with acetic acid, magnesium powder with titanium tetrachloride, and so forth. Generally, the reduction system using iron powder and acetic acid requires high-temperature conditions for proceeding. After the reaction completes, pyridine tends to form a salt with protic acids, thus pH adjustment is necessary during the post-treatment process to liberate 4-Amino-2-bromopyridine from its salt form.
