3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzylalcohol is also a very useful intermediate in the preparation of 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)halo-benzyls, for example 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzylbromide or benzylchloride.

Synthesis

A process for preparing 3,5-Bis(trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol by formylation in a solvent of an appropriate organo-magnesium derivative with solid paraformaldehyde and optionally its conversion into a 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzyl halide.
