Chemical Properties

Trans-2,5-Dimethylpiperazine, a white crystalline solid melting at 118° C., has shown particular promise as an intermediate for linear polyamides because of its symmetry. The cis isomer, a liquid freezing at about 18° C., probably has limited use in polymers but is expected to be useful as a pharmaceutical intermediate.^[2]

Uses

Trans-2,5-dimethylpiperazine is primarily as a monomer for synthesizing a specific polyamide polymer, which is then used as a material for reverse osmosis membranes.^[1]

Synthesis

In the presence of hydrogenation-dehydrogenation catalysts, isopropanolamine undergoes a bimolecular cycloamination reaction to form 2,5-dimethylpiperazine^[2]:
