Cedarwood oil Chemical Properties,Usage,Production

Background and overview

Cedar wood oil is an important natural plant fragrance, belonging to the aromatic oil, which is a light yellow to yellow clear oily liquid with the characteristic aroma of cypress wood. The main components of cedar oil are α-cedrene, β-cedrene, cedrol and cedar wood, etc. It can be processed into a series of products for the formulation of perfumes for make-up and soap. Cypress oil can be extracted from the dry roots of cypress tree, being one of China's major exported essential oils.

Production method

It is sensitive to light, being soluble in 10-20 parts 90% ethanol, insoluble in water. The relative density is 0.94-0.95. Specific rotation -25 ~ -46°. Flash point of 110 ℃. It is irritating. The related products also include artificial cedar oil formulated with sesquiterpene and rosin.
Cedar root, trunk or its waste are used as raw material; use steam distillation to obtain crude oil with the oil rate of 1-6%. Cedar crude oil was fractionated to obtain refined cedar oil.

Application

It is used as a fragrance and microscope oil. The product is important spice for deployment of soap and cosmetic flavor, especially used in a large amount in sandalwood type essence. Cypress and cedrene can also be isolated from it for further synthesis of cedryl acetate, methyl cedryl ether, acetyl cedrene and other spices. The main use is in the modulation of flavor and medicine, and used to extract cedar brain. It can also be used for further synthesis of cedryl acetate, methyl cedryl ether, acetyl cedrene and other spices.

Chemical Properties

Texas cedarwood oil is produced by steam distillation of chopped wood of the Texas cedar, Juniperus mexicana Schiede (Cupressaceae). It is a brown to reddish-brown, viscous liquid that may partially solidify at room temperature. It has a characteristic cedarwood odor. d2020 0.950–0.966; n20D 1.5020–1.5100; α20D ?52° to ?30°; total alcohol content (calculated as cedrol): 35–48%; solubility: 1 vol in notmore than 5 vol of 90% ethanol at 20 ℃. Composition by GC: α-cedrene 15–25%, thujopsene 25–35%, cedrol 20% minimum. For uses, see Virginia cedarwood oil.

Uses

Cedar oil is used as immersion oil in light microscopy.

Uses

cedarwood oil (Thuja occidentalis)(cedar; thuja) is credited with an tiseptic, sedative, and astringent properties. It is used as a fixative in fragrances because it blends well with other oils. This clear oil C is also valuable for use on skin eruptions and to relieve itching. It is good for acne and oily skin, and could be helpful in cases of dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis. Two types of cedarwood oil exist: Atlas cedarwood oil from Morocco (Cedrus atlantica) and one derived from the Juniperus virginiana (or red cedar) that is a juniper of the united States (its oil, however, is very similar to true cedarwood). The oil may cause skin irritation when used in high concentrations. Cedarwood oil is obtained from recently dried, leafy, young twigs.
