PHENETHYL SALICYLATE Usage And Synthesis
Chemical Properties
Phenylethyl Salicylate has been reported to occur in some essential flower oils, is a crystalline solid (mp 44°C) with a weak, long-lasting, balsamic, blossom odor, reminiscent of rose and hyacinth.
Chemical Properties
Phenethyl salicylate has a faint but persistent rose-like odor, somewhat hyacinth- and carnation-like. It has a sweet taste suggestive of peach, apricot and honey.
Chemical Properties
White to light yellow crystalline powder
Preparation
From phenethyl alcohol and methylsalicylate by interchange; also by esterification of phenethyl alcohol with salicylic acid.
Definition
ChEBI: Phenethyl salicylate is a member of phenols and a benzoate ester. It is functionally related to a salicylic acid.
Production Methods
Phenethyl salicylate can be produced 1) from Phenylethyl alcohol and Methyl salicylate by alcohol interchange reaction. 2) by azeotropic esterification of Phenylethyl alcohol with Salicylic acid.
Safety Profile
Combustible liquid. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes
