Definition
ChEBI: Methantheline bromide is a member of xanthenes.
General Description
Methanthelinebromide, diethyl(2-hydroxyethyl)methylammonium bromidexanthene-9-carboxylate (Banthine Bromide), is awhite, slightly hygroscopic, crystalline salt that is solublein water to produce solutions with a pH of about 5.Aqueous solutions are not stable and hydrolyze in a fewdays. The bromide form is preferable to the very hygroscopicchloride.
Among the conditions for which methantheline bromideis indicated are gastritis, intestinal hypermotility, bladderirritability, cholinergic spasm, pancreatitis, hyperhidrosis, and peptic ulcer, all of which are manifestations ofparasympathotonia.
Clinical Use
Methantheline bromide, introduced in 1950, is a potent anticholinergicagent and acts at the nicotinic cholinergic receptors of thesympathetic and parasympathetic systems, as well as at themyoneural junction of the postganglionic cholinergic fibers.Like other quaternary ammonium drugs, methantheline bromideis absorbed incompletely from the GI tract.
