Gadolinium boride is a rare-earth organic compound that can increase the hardness of B4C materials. Literature reports its potential use as a radiation-shielding functional additive in the preparation of a high-temperature resistant epoxy resin-based neutron and gamma-ray shielding composite material.

It is prepared from the following components in parts by weight: 50-100 parts epoxy resin; 10-100 parts curing agent; 100-800 parts radiation-shielding functional additives; 5-100 parts fiber reinforcement material; 10-150 parts flame-retardant functional filler; and 1-50 parts processing aids. The radiation-shielding functional additives include one or more of boron powder, boron carbide, gadolinium boride, boron oxide, boron nitride, boron anhydride, lithium, gadolinium, tungsten, lead, copper, iron, and their compounds. This high-temperature resistant epoxy resin-based neutron and gamma-ray shielding composite material contains a high hydrogen content, boron compounds, heavy metal elements, flame retardants, and fiber reinforcement materials, giving it good heat resistance and dimensional stability, and enabling stable and effective protection against neutrons and gamma rays.
