AMINE:OXYGEN OXIDOREDUCTASE [DEAMINATING] Usage And Synthesis

Uses

Monoamine oxidase (EC 1.4.3.4) is an enzyme composed of different polypeptides. Monoamine oxidation catalyzes the oxidative deamination of various biological amines in brain and peripheral tissues by producing hydrogen peroxide. Monoamine oxidase plays an important role in maintaining the regulation of synaptic transmission, emotional behavior and other brain functions[1][2].

Definition

An enzyme that is distributedwidely among animals. It inactivates a number ofbiogenic amines by catalyzing the oxidative deam-ination of these compounds.

Biological Activity

The protein VAP-1 (vascular adhesion protein-1) belongs to the group of semicarbazide sensitive amine oxidases (SSAO) th at catalyze the formation of reactive oxygen species. It is a unique adhesion molecule th at participates in inflammatory leukocyte recruitment in blood vessels. It functions in leukocyte extravasation to inflamed tissues. In the human eye, it has been associated with ocular inflammatory diseases, such as uveitis, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Its expression has been observed to be altered in several diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and atherosclerosis.
