Uses

L-beta-Homoalanine hydrochloride is an alanine derivative[1].

Synthesis

1. Thermal Michael addition of ethyl (E)-but-2-enoate with benzylamine.
2. Lipase CAL-B is added to catalyze the reaction.
3. The reaction mixture is worked up. The organic phase is washed with sat. NaHCO? solution to give an intermediate mixture.
4. An aqueous NaOH solution is added and the mixture is stirred for 16 hours.
5. The aqueous layer is treated with an ion exchanger (Merck-III), eluted with HCl, and evaporated under reduced pressure to yield the hydrochloride salt.
